Minimal Mac

Your Mac, simplified.

This is the first part of a new series I am calling “Enough”. This is, in part, inspired by the many posts at Last Years Model. In this series, I will feature people who are using older software and/or hardware because it is enough for what they need to do. The words are their own. Big thanks to all who contribute their stories, reasons, and methods. Enjoy…

Eudora by Elizabeth Buie

Here are the reasons I love Eudora.  There are probably others, but these are what come to mind right now.

  1. It doesn’t display images. This helps me avoid distracting content; even more importantly, it prevents web beacons from invading my privacy.
  2. I can have multiple windows open at the same time.  As a Mac user for more than 20 years, I care a lot about this.  I don’t have to hide one folder to see another.
  3. It doesn’t display HTML or styled text.  (It would if I wanted it to, but I don’t.) This allows me to focus on the content.
  4. Messages I send are in plain text and don’t increase bandwidth or noise unnecessarily.
  5. It allows me to use the standard “>” method of indicating quoted text.  (Some webmail apps do too, but I don’t like webmail.)
  6. It alerts me when a link doesn’t go to the site/page to which it purports to point, and gives me the option of visiting that page or not.  (Newer apps may do that as well; not saying they don’t.)
  7. It allows me to define multiple personalities easily, and to send mail from any one of them that I choose.  In this way I can easily use it for both my personal and business mail accounts.
  8. It allows me to specify a length of time that old messages will remain on the server, and it automatically deletes messages when they exceed that age.

Note - Are you using older software or hardware because it is enough for you? Please submit your story or send email to patrickrhone at gmail dot com.
