Minimal Mac

Your Mac, simplified.

The text file. Brilliant in it’s simplicity and it’s flexibility. Infinitely portable. I mean, seriously, anything can read it – Mac, Windows, Unix. Type one up on your fast new Mac, transfer it to that old Apple II I know you have kicking around in your Mother’s basement, launch it, and there it is. Just like you left it. Type up a letter. Type up a todo list. Format for the internet (or even ease of reading) using Markdown. The possibilities are astounding.

Here are some of my favorite write-ups on using text files. Hopefully they will spark some new ideas for you:

  • My Daily Log - Not to be a pompous arse but I am rather proud of my setup for using a text file and Quicksilver to keep a daily log. Some good links at the end as well.

  • Big Arse Text Files - Both Matthew Cornell and Giles Turnbull use a single large text file for just about everything form notes to tasks to clippings.

  • todo.txt - If you are a fan of the command line for getting stuff done, look no further than Gina Trapani’s ToDo.sh scripting environment.
